Jeff Arnim commented on Day 42 - Canon City, CO to Fairplay, CO

I rode the TransAm all through Colorado ten years ago and that stretch between Harstel and Fairplay was the worst; it was exactly what you experienced. But things got a lot better at Breckenridge, because there are many miles of bike paths, and when you pick up the highway after Silverthorne the shoulder is wide. Once you turn north on 125, not far after Hot Sulphur Springs, there's hardly any traffic.

You two are doing great. Keep it up!

The Colorado drivers are the absolute worst entitled assholes. After several tours there, I will never do paved road touring in Colorado again, and probably not even dirt road touring there. I've basically had enough of the place for the rest of my life.

Wyoming will be much, much better.

Don’t throw rocks at these idiots. They are often armed and looking for excuses to use those arms.

I hate to even make this suggestion because it should never have to be made, but consider picking up American flags to wave on the back of your bikes to keep the fakeriots off of your ass. This behavior right here is why we don’t tour in the states. Rachel Hugens, who has biked in 62 countries and circled the world twice got ‘coal rolled’ in my hometown county in Montana last week. The hostility is palpable in this country and it’s really hard to see past it even when 90% of interactions are civil and/or friendly. Good luck. I’m really sorry that happened to you all.

I love your narrations , Jordan. They make me feel like I am there too.
They make me chuckle often, but bring a tear to my eye sometimes,
especially the one on Father’s Day! Carry on!
Much to you and Mary, Marnie

They are disgusting, and riding past them when I've toured in the west is one of the reasons I finally became a vegetarian a few years ago.

Hot tip for keeping water cold: wrap it in a jacket or other clothing and keep it in your pannier. Heat stroke is no joke, try to find hydration powders/tablets and sports drinks because once it’s in the 90s and above (110 on the asphalt road) you’re not actually going to be able to drink it off with just water.

Even though it's hot right now in Kansas, it gets surprisingly cold at the higher elevations as you go further west. I remember freezing in Guffey (my next stop after Pueblo), and I was in a cabin, not even a tent that night, haha.

Thanks for the advice! Pueblo might have some good outdoor stores too...

I'm enjoying the journal - thanks for writing it!

Based on my own experiences, I do think you'll definitely want to get a sleeping bag once you get past, say, Pueblo, Colorado ;)

You two are pretty gutsy for taking on such a BIG goal. May God bless you both on your journey.

So true. We have had one experience where the leader of the group was chased. She was about 3o ft ahead of the pack. The most effective method so far seems to be getting off the bike. Usually the dogs go back to their yard.
