So Easy! Napier to Waipukurau

Napier to Waipukurau

Although today’s ride of 88 km on backroads and paths,.with 580 ascent, should have felt difficult, it was surprisingly easy. Possibly because we’d had a rest day, the first 30km was mostly flat, coastal paths and the weather was excellent. We even gained the benefit of a tailwind for some of the day.

The only hiccup was that at day’s end, Joel had a low speed fall and twisted an ankle. He’s able to walk so hopefully he’ll be able to cycle ok in the morning.

In February this year, the Hawkes Bay, including Napier and Waipukurau, had suffered massive floods due to a cyclone. Cyclone Gabrielle.  The damage was extensive. And it included washouts of bike paths under bridges. It was one of these washouts which had contributed to Joel’s fall.

We found basic but clean cabin accommodation in the local campground. With three of us, accommodation has been costing us $30-40 per night. NZ campgrounds are well set up with camp kitchens and other facilities.

Well signed bike ways are a feature of the Hawkes Bay area

Patangata Tavern. Our lunch stop. A pub with character and excellent food. It was established by a well known Rugby Union player.

Rich FrasierThis varietal sounds like it’s perfect for me, the box wine connoisseur.

Graham SmithTo Rich FrasierRich I’m hoping this wine is a myth. By contrast to the description of Purple Death, NZ makes some of the world’s best wines.
Country pub drinkers I’ve seen, seem to favour beer.
