Everything One Needs to Know About Me and My Tour (In Fourteen Quatrains & One Map)

Ode to a Middle-American Bicycle Touring Bum

TOURING HISTORY

He hasn't toured in Europe,
He hasn't biked in Asia,
All the places he's never been,
Would certainly amaze ya.
He never ventures anywhere,
'cept the land he's from,
He's just an unremarkable
American touring bum.

TOURING STYLE

He's carefree and impulsive.
That much everyone knows.
He just tries to keep it simple,
And have fun wherever he goes.

He doesn't spend much money,
He takes things as they come,
His planning is atrocious,
He's a Midwestern touring bum.

CHARACTER TRAITS

Naive and unsophisticated,
No culture and no class,
He's just a typically backward
Midwestern touring ass.
A pedaling contradiction,
Well read, yet pretty dumb.
Sociable, yet a happy loner,
He's a Midwestern touring bum.

ON JOURNALING

He likes to write about his trips,
But he isn't very serious,
His posts are full of half-baked jokes,
Some say he seems delirious.
No doubt he brags too much,
He's egomaniacally numb,
Would you expect anything less from
A Midwestern touring bum.

PACKING LIST

What's in those panniers of his?
The dude is much too vague.
He rarely gives a glimpse of
What's in his saddle bags.
It's not hi-tech touring stuff,
There's nothing very unique,
It's just the basic touring gear,
Of a Midwestern touring freak.

THE ROUTE

He's up to his old tricks again,
Such an unspectacular route,
He seems to relish riding in
Places no one cares about.
He thinks he's found a noble cause,
The concept of keeping it local,
But really it proves to one and all,
He's a Midwestern touring yokel.
It's but a wedge-shaped chunk of
The Land of Beer and Cheese,
Of Badgers, Brewers & Packers,
Of hills and farms and trees.
A tour of southwest Wisconsin,
Could be lame and boring and glum,
I'm afraid that's all you'll get from,
That Middle American bum.
At this time, the only available route detail for this tour is that it will be conducted within the wedge of Wisconsin cheddar shown above.

Gregory GarceauTo Bill ShaneyfeltThanks Bill. I'm sure I'll be relying on you to identify some Wisconsin plants and animals.

Gregory GarceauTo Scott Anderson"Amazing" is an understatement. I'll go out on a limb and say this tour will be "ultra-super-amazing." Kind of like a tour in France.

George HallOnce while touring in Wisconsin a fellow cyclist came out and welcomed me and my touring partner to Minnesota - and it just so happens that he writes pretty good poetry for a Midwestern Touring Yokel! Can't wait to follow along as you live the good life touring Wisconsin.

Bill ShaneyfeltTo Gregory GarceauI'll give it a try. Eager to see what you find in that cheesy area. I lived not too far away, in Savanna, IL ('78-85 I think), and remember some stuff up in that area.

Kelly IniguezA nice side benefit of touring close to home this year is not worrying about the price of gas getting to the start.

Gregory GarceauTo Angela NaefI always like it when I get a message from somebody I haven't heard from before. Thank you, Angela, for reading and for complimenting my "poem."

Gregory GarceauTo George HallI seem to remember reading about that Minnesotan in your journal. Welcoming you to Minnesota while still in Wisconsin seemed a little strange, but then I saw him in your video and that confirmed just how strange he was.

By the way, the picture of me headstanding in front of the "Welcome to Wisconsin" sign (on the Journals Page) was taken in Prescott, where you had lunch that day.

Gregory GarceauTo Kelly IniguezYes, the price of gasoline is one of several good reasons to tour close to home. I think I'll write something about that later on today.

Gregory GarceauTo marilyn swettI've always been a high-concept kind of guy. Ha!

marilyn swettWe also did a 'concept' ride back as a training run before we did our first long tour. It was in the southern part of Colorado and we called it the 'ice cream' ride as the loop route looked like a scoop of ice cream on a waffle cone. I think I wrote it up for that other site.

Gregory GarceauThank you, Paul. I just hope my little poem didn't turn anybody into a verse-a-PHOBIC.
