Day 44 - Easton to Chestertown

We took a short rail trail this morning leaving Easton. It was a nice, shady trail with a good surface.

However, it had ridiculous barriers at road crossings which required dismounting the bike to get through. Out bike barely made it. They serve their intended function, though. Signs at the crossings say that cyclists must dismount.

At this one, Kerry had to go out through the grass to get the bike at an angle that would allow him to walk it through. We were glad that this trail was only a mile on our route. I can't imagine it being used much by local cyclists.

marilyn swettThat maneuver sure looks familiar! I'm surprised the panniers fit through the narrow opening.

Jeanna & Kerry SmithTo marilyn swettIt is so aggravating to encounter things like this. We have had places that required removing the rear panniers. Bike trails designed by non-cyclists!

Once we got our of town, we were back on very pretty farm and pasture land.

This one looks like a midwestern farm.

There were several historical markers on today's route.

The little red schoolhouse was not open for tours today.

The columbarium at the end of the walkway - burial urns are interred here. In the background there is a bridge which crosses what is now a small stream. In 1721, it was the Wye East River and was the primary transportation route for parishioners attending Old Wye Church.

Just past the church was the Wye Oak.  It was the largest white oak tree in the United States when in fell in a storm in 2002.  It was believed to be 450 years old at that time.

This stands at the site today. This tree was started from a cloned seedling of the Wye Oak and planted here in 2006.

We aren't in almost completely flat terrain now.  We had many ups and downs today - almost all of them with a stream at the bottom.
