As we walked through the portico we found these Hail Mary tablets in many different languages.

The porticos surround the church. It was interesting that the pillars are all different.

Saint Francis in front of the Portiuncula which means a "small portion of land". It's a small chapel.

This rose was quite fragrant. We also spotted a Dolly Parton rose but unfortunately it wasn't in bloom.

This is the only body interred in the catacombs - Saint Benignus of Armagh. The face is wax but the hands and feet are bones.

This gives you an idea of how dark it was in the catacombs.

Our guide told us when they were laying the marble floor in the church they discovered this stone that contains the fossilized skeleton of a snake. The stone was layed at the bottom of one altar so good is always over evil.

The Franciscan cross. The church was laid out in this format.

One altar with beautiful stained glass.

This is the main altar in the center of the church. It is covered by a large canopy known as a baldanchino which protects the altar from rain entering through the oculus in the dome above. The columns contain images of birds and flowers, to honor St. Francis, as well as the 12 apostles.

This is the bishop's chair. Our guide said that he has to dust it as the bishop doesn't visit the monastery very often.

Another view inside the church looking the other direction across the main altar.
