A Big Day of Cycle Touring: Tocumwal to Echuca

The ride today was physically hard and included 60km of unsealed backroads and tracks. It was memorable because of the remarkable River Red Gum forests and birdlife. The wetlands, the flat river plains, billabongs and bird filled forests are very special. We even had the special treat of emus running along beside us for a kilometre or so.

Morning tea in Tocumwal was interesting for a chat with a good humoured retired farmer and part Aboriginal fellow from Queensland who lived in a van near the river. He had a recurring theme about how he humans should interact with nature:
“Just leave it alone!” was his mantra.

Accommodation for the evening was the Echuca Pub. They provided lock up space for the bikes in a back shed at the pub.

Alone... but not lonely on the back roads to Echuca
