Detours to Marysville

Eildon to Marysville

Eildon is a sad little village. Half the shops are boarded up and the ones left look like they’ve been battered by the Covid economy. After a mediocre coffee at an uninspiring cafe we head out on a minor road before peeling off onto Bulls lane that leads us up into the hills. It’s another good dirt road with a consistent gradient. With a few stops we get over the top and head down hill on a beaten up muddy track before joining a better gravel road that takes us into Cathedral National Park.

We’re in areas that were flooded recently

The big climb of the day awaits, but at the turn-off the presence of a policeman and an SES vehicle confirms the track is shut with land slips and fallen trees. We take the easier option of the sealed road to Buxton and then have a gradual 11k drag up to Marysville.

It’s a different scenario here. No empty shops and no accommodation except for the caravan park. We opt for that and venture on tomorrow.
