Tourist day in Salzburg

Lots of walking - 18,726 steps

Today we played tourist in Salzburg. We visited the Hohensalzburg Fortress, rode up on the Festung Bahn, it’s a long way up. It is the largest castle complex in Europe and was begun around 900. Visited the museums in the castle and explored the castle yard. We went up and around and up and around and up and up and up to the top of one of the towers were we had a fantastic panorama view of Salzburg and the alps. We decided to walk back down to the city rather than taking the funicular. One video used a Bruegel painting of medieval life to compare it to present day life. Comparisons included dice, drums, tops, balloons dominoes, dog poop, ring/hoop toys,

Next we crossed the river and walked down to the Mirabelle gardens saw some of the Sound of Music locations, and had great fun in the gnome garden. Inside there were a lot of marble cherubs and soldiers in the alcoves going up a grand stairwell. In the gardens the scent was very aromatic and the designs were elaborate.

Finally, we went to the house where Mozart lived.  Most of the info was about Leopold Mozart,  Amadeus’ Father and his accomplishments as well as what he did to help his son’s career.
