No Titel

I didn't want to foreshadow in the title what has transpired since Tuesday. I have  been putting off writing this entry, but now it's time.

We aren't going to Hungary.

On both hands 24/7

I'll back up a little. We had a great tour planned and Susan Carpenter was going to join us! We had all the logistics worked out for three bikes on the car and had booked our stays in interesting places. We were so excited about our Hungarian tour which was going to be a bit different from our usual tours. Janos and I have ridden our bikes in Hungary before but we hadn't really explored much, it was more or less follow-the-Danube from Vienna to Budapest. Unfortunately, I have no journal from the ride. This time around we were planning to take our time in some interesting towns with our eyes wide open and cameras in hand. I was concerned about the predicted heat wave but knew we would cope. But that was not meant to be, not yet anyway.

Tuesday morning in our apartment I tripped and fell, a faceplant. I automatically stretched out my hands to break the fall, as one does. Everything hurt but I had the most pain in my hands and I knew I had to see a doctor. Fortunately, I was able to get an appointment with an orthopedist for the same day in Gauting where we live. X-rays showed a hairline fracture on my left ulna and no fracture but a severe contusion on my right hand. The doctor said cycling was absolutely out of the question. Well, I didn't exactly feel like riding my bike anymore anyway.  Back from the doctor's, I called Susan and we discussed our options. We briefly considered taking the trip, Susan and Janos could cycle and I could just not cycle. It didn't take us long to realize that wasn't a good idea. We wanted to cycle together.

I got braces for both hands the next morning, very uncomfortable at first since both hands were still very painful. I couldn't imagine wearing them for four to six weeks. Today, three days after the fall, the pain and discomfort have subsided and I am feeling pretty normal except I can't do much with my hands. I am thankful that things are not worse. I am able to dress, eat and wash without help, I'm just not much use in the household or kitchen. And can't ride my bike.

Of course, we canceled all our bookings immediately, no charges. But we are already thinking when can we fit in this tour when I have sufficiently recovered.

This attempted performance of a Hungarian Rhapsody only had an overture and a finale, nothing in between. It should have been played by a trio, with passages in allegro or adagio, leggero or forte. But it turned out to be more a scherzo with accidentals. In lieu of a journal titled A Hungarian Rhapsody, here is a performance of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody n°2, probably the most popular of his 19 piano pieces based on Hungarian folk themes, which he composed during 1846–1853, and later in 1882 and 1885.

Maybe there will be a journal, Hungarian Rhapsody N°2?

Rich FrasierYou must be so disappointed! I hope everything heals and we get to see this voyage happen sometime in the future.

Steve Miller/GrampiesOh, Suzanne. How distressing for all of you. At least it happened before you found yourselves in midtrip on a quiet road far from medical help. How's that for looking on the bright side? Hope you heal quickly, take it easy, enjoy the enforced rest and let Janos take care of you.

Suzanne GibsonTo Steve Miller/GrampiesYes, you have to look at the bright side. Now I can be the helpless female and let myself be waited on. Not really my thing...

Mike AylingSorry to read about your fall. Stick to the medical advice and wear the braces for as long as necessary.
Now prevention - Mary and I have been attending weekly strength and balance classes for a number of years. We believe that it helps us avoid falls.

Suzanne GibsonTo Mike AylingYes, strength and balance are so important. I, too, work on strength. I am lucky, the gym is almost next door. And 2 tai chi classes a week must be good for balance. Still I fell 🤨

Mike AylingTo Suzanne GibsonStanding then walking toe to heel is a good balance exercise. Then do it backwards. Then try with your eyes shut which I can't manage.

Karen PoretMust be something “in the water”, as you are the third person I know of that has done a faceplant in the last two weeks. As content as we are with our usual surroundings it seems these are ( excuse the pun), a downfall.
Time for your elevenses, without the bike! Enjoy!

Nancy GrahamIt goes without saying how sorry I am, but I will say it anyway. Sorry not only for your injury from the fall, but for your disappointment of having to cancel/reschedule your planned trip with Janos and Susan. And I know all about the difficulty of keeping injured body parts still! We must stop taking these falls!! Heal well and thoroughly for strong riding afterward. Do not try to rush your natural rhythm of healing.

Now I wait for you tour of Hungary that you will be doing at a later date.

Suzanne GibsonThanks, Nancy! I really am having a hard time not using my hands too much. But Janos cooked the complete dinner tonight. I didn't even go into the kitchen!

Gregory GarceauSince so many of your Cycleblaze friends have already said the things I wanted to say, I'll just leave it at: "Sorry about your injury. Get well soon. Use your down time for route-planning."

Scott FenwickSuzanne, I am so sorry to hear and see the aftermath of your fall. How terrible. I was really looking forward to reading about your and Janos trip as I find that rides in Hungary are really under represented on CB. It is also an area that really interests Pat and I. We have dipped our toe into this country a couple of times but realize that it presents many more opportunities. Keep working on your language skills as you recover and we look forward to your rescheduled adventure.

Suzanne GibsonAlthough it's too early to say how soon I'll be able to ride my bike, we are looking at dates for a possible tour in Hungary. If I'm up to it, we'll be ready!

Rich HarrellDitto what everyone else has said --- the fall is unfortunate enough, but the disappointment just magnifies it.

You will return with sparks flying from that E-bike!!!

Best!
