Prague

Two days of idleness

Arriving in Prague on a Saturday was a slight problem as we had some serious planning to do.  We decided to stay for 3 nights for a number of reasons.  The planning would be simpler on the Monday, I might even get my phone repaired and my back is making walking rather difficult so really it needed a rest.

What a good idea it was.  Our hotel is absolutely fantastic.  It is right in the middle of the action by the Powder Tower, although so close to everything it is quite,  the receptionist is full of knowledge, the room is great -with a kettle - and a superb breakfast to linger over.  It is the Best Western Plus Meteor Plaza.  I have found a place to get my phone repaired - have been trying for over 2 weeks and it has always been next week, next month and I wouldn't have been surprised next year.  Took it in this morning at 10, they have to get the appropriate glass in and it will be ready between 1 and 2.  We have been  so impressed by the great service we have been getting everywhere in Prague.

As far as our onward journey is concerned.  We are actually about a week further on than we anticipated so can expand it.  If we take the recommended route to Munich it goes through Pilsen which is a huge industrial town but if we go via Linz although a lot longer it takes us through several interesting small towns in the Czech Republic - the die is cast as I have made some hotel bookings.  We found an excellent little map shop, Mapy, which specializes in hiking and cycling maps so we are all set.  Ken was feeling concerned about however we would be able to leave this mass of humanity but he set off on foot this morning and has sussed out the way to the cycle route we will be following.  In the Czech Republic, a bit like the Netherlands the routes are numbered, they are very well marked so once we find it we will be following number 11

This is a city absolutely overrun by tourists, the sheer mass of humanity makes you feel tired.  Because of my back I have done little except sit in cafes and drink coffee or in bars and drink beer as I watch the entire world go past.  Yesterday Ken went on a walking tour focussing on the effects of WW2 on Prague and a very sorry story it is too.  Yes Pat he did end up at the church where Heyndrick's assassins were eventually tracked down and killed.  At the moment he is at the Communist Museum (my back doesn't do museums). Ken is just back from this wonderful museum which as he says really calls a spade a spade and what an inefficient evil 40 years it was.  What a sad and sorry pass this country has had it certainly makes you feel extremely grateful for the easy time we have had in New Zealand.

On a much lighter note last night we went to a concert of Mozart and Djorvak.  There was a small chamber orchestra of 6 string players and very good they were then out to dinner in a charming restaurant near by - we will be back there tonight

Lunch at our favourite restaurant

Tricia GrahamTo Steve Miller/GrampiesAnother one of my orthopaedic problems! I have had two back fusions but still get problems - OK on the bike but walking can be a problem as it is at the moment. As you can see I am an orthopaedic nightmare or as ken says more accurately an orthopaedic goldmine! After two days of lying around much better and ready to go
