Kostrzyn - Polland - Wandering around North Germany - CycleBlaze

Kostrzyn - Polland

It would have been an easy day if we hadn't been blasting into a head wind all day

We ate last night at what must be the social centre of Cedynia - the Pizza Restaurant/ Eise cafe.  It really was very nice much more unmarket than the rest of the town.  There were teenagers, workman, couples - most were sitting outside in this beautiful evening but it wouldn't have mattered if there had been a massive storm as all or nearly all were smoking, in our short time in Poland we have been horrified by the amount of smoking.  I saw one good looking young guy and immediately warmed to him as he looked the image of our grandson Jacob - must be the Polish in Jacob.  Ken is an addicted news watcher so back in our room he watched the news in Polish!  Don't know what he got out of it but he told me it was a great news program.

The thing Cedynia is most proud of is the defeat Hodo 1of Lusitia by Mieszko 1of Poland in the battle of Cedynia on the 24th June 972

This morning although we were staying here in Poland tonight we decided to cross over and ride on the German side as the route on the Polish side looked real Tiger territory.  Our hostess told me they have wolves in the forest we may even have seen one!  This meant a 7km ride on a very busy road to the border crossing.  All our flashing lights went on and we put on our high viz gear and really went for it.  The traffic although very heavy was very careful.  One of the interesting things is something I noticed yesterday.  These little border towns have many many shops sell all sorts of things and particularly cigarettes and people are poring over the border from Germany. This was (apart from all the shops) a really tiny town but it even had 2 supermarkets.

I don't quite understand the appeal of these shops but there were several of them

Back in Germany we were on a perfectly marked perfectly sealed cycle highway away from any traffic.  It was on the dyke beside the Oder and was travelling SE, the brisk wind was also SE.  Now we were seeing many more cycle tourists, they nearly all seemed to be going in the other direction and were flying along.  Now the small settlements all seemed to have cafes and other such facilities that cycle tourists love.  We had a nice morning coffee at one but the best was the little place we stopped for lunch.  The owner told she how much she wanted to go hiking in New Zealand but now New Zealand had come to see her!  It is interesting that still all the cycle tourists we see seem to be German

Approaching the river crossing over to Kostrysn we saw an enormous bridge - kind of a motorway one with traffic hurtling over it.  How did we get up to it, it looked like certain death.  Ken however kept on following the map and we came to a little quite one over one braid of the Oder then another over the main river and to our hotel.  This is rather an odd place rather like a motorway pull in with several petrol stations, cigarette sealers, restaurants open 24h a day and this enormous hotel.  It suits us well and like everything seems to be in Poland very cheap

Today's ride: 65 km (40 miles)
Total: 902 km (560 miles)
