Take it Easy: Murrayville to Lameroo

Today’s ride was a comparatively short day on a quiet Sunday. The cycling was very pleasant due to favourable wind and cool morning air. A major milestone was crossing the state border from Victoria into South Australia. We had a morning break in Pinaroo then rolled on to Lameroo via Parilla in the Southern Mallee Shire:

Enquiry at the Lameroo pub revealed that we could camp for a nominal fee at the local reserve which had showers and toilets.
We set up on a grassy area in shade, and were soon joined for a long, fascinating chat with 81 year old retired wheat farmer Clarrie Scholz (or Schulz). Clarrie is an excellent narrator and told us much about the history of the region and himself.

The camp at Lameroo was excellent until about 1:30am in the morning when a hidden, powerful and automated lawn sprinkling system came on, drenched us and forced us to relocate. I was sleeping under the stars in a bivvy, and John in his tent.

The disruption continued when a slightly unhinged woman drove loudly into the campground carpark at 2pm with music blaring and carlights shining into our camp. She let out her dog Fluffy for a walk while she smoked a cigarette. John politely asked if she was staying long, which triggered a bit of an outburst from here. Eventually she drove off, and I was able sleep until dawn. It’s been an interesting night.

Does size matter? It does on tractors in Pinnaroo. My tyres are 1.6” Marathon Supremes. Thanks for asking.

Lameroo camp. The Mont bivvy is quick to roll out. The green grass is a clue why it was not a good idea to camp in this area.
