Day 19 - Vandalia, IL to Taylorville, IL

More farms, more fields, more low traffic highways...

We had "only" 50 miles routed for today, which seemed short after our recent long ones.  It was hotter today - low 90's - but not really bad.  Felt like home!

Lots of hay bales

Kerry said I didn't have soybean pictures. It wasn't hard to find a bean field to photograph!

For our friend Jerry - cool old truck. They always make us think of you.

Old farm equipment

We had good shoulder part of the way. We didn't have to contend with any viciously misplaced rumble strips.

Some of the traffic we encountered today. There was a fair amount of farm machinery on the road.

In Ramsey, we saw this local railroad display.

Just for Stan H. A small rail display in Ramsey, IL.

The Nickel Plate used to run through my hometown. The Nickel Plate ran down the west side of the Muskingum River and the B&O ran down the east side. In high school, I worked for a fuel oil distributor and the NPRR yard was right across from the fuel depot. We would load the truck with diesel, drive across the street and fuel the locomotives. If I remember correctly, a truck load of fuel would only fill 3 locomotives. The distributor loved that account - quick easy money! Kerry

At about mile 29, we got onto the Lincoln Prairie Trail.  It's a rail-trail that runs right along Hwy 29 to Taylorville.  It was cool and shady in spots.

Jeanna & Kerry SmithKeith,
I don't remember seeing any campgrounds yet. I don't think this part of IL is a vacation destination.

Other places were in the full sun and some of the surface got a little rough.

Near the end of the trail in Taylorville, with no advance warning, we came to this.

Fortunately, we only had to ride back about .25 miles to get on Hwy 29

The town of Taylorville looks as if it were once a prosperous community.  Time seems not to have been very kind to it.

The Christian County Courthouse is very attractive.

There are some beautiful old buildings downtown on the courthouse square.

But we saw more views like this than we did of the couple nice blocks downtown.  These video poker places are numerous in the small towns we've passed through.
