Health Day

Par Boiled, Chilled and Battered

Luodong has turned out to be a delightful regional city in a remarkable area of fertile agriculture and hot springs. So we decided to stay here a day longer.

The summary is we decided to rebook into the hotel, and do a return day ride with light loads out toward the northern hills where there are hot springs. We reached a town called Xiaoxi or Jiaoxi or Jiaosi.

We mostly followed Road 9 with a few diversions and detours. In Jiaoxi we enjoyed a thorough soak in hot and cold pools. It was more like an aqua park than a hot spring or onsen. It even had a water slide. No we didn’t try the slide, but after an hour or so soaking  in the pools, we rode the 20+ kms back to Luodong.

This day ride (our last full day of cycling on this trip) in the countryside was another pleasant treadle in perfect weather, on excellent paths and roads rolling through very interesting  landscapes with a mix of farming, villages and creeping urbanisation.

Taiwan really is an easy, enjoyable country to cycle tour in. I’m already wanting to return here for another cycle tour and we haven’t left yet.

Not quite paradise but close. The rural countryside not far from Luodong.

It was a reflective type of day. It’s almost the end of this Taiwan journey.

Outer urban intensive farming. Something we don’t see at home.

Water, water. Not a flood but irrigated farming across the Yilan plain.

MacMansion in the middle of padi farms. Are farmers selling their land to developers? If so, what do landless farmers do?

What looks to be a block of intensive housing in the middle of rice padis. Great colours.

More pics will be added when WiFi is stronger. Stay tuned.

We cycled toward those hills.

Joe shows how fast we think we can ride without panniers.

I’ve cycled in temperatures this high. But not for long. And I only endured about five minutes of immersion in this 43°C.

And I’ve cycled for hours in this temperature. But I couldn’t sit in this water for more three minutes.

No idea what the yellow colour is. Any suggestions?

This is a health treatment. Not a riot control water cannon. Shower on steroids. That’s son Joe under there. He survived.

Our bikes in a safe parking space at the hot springs.

Dinner. Two alcohol burners cooked this at our cafe table. Does this count as Trangia camp cooking?

How good is this? Just rode 45 km, soaked in a hot and cold spring and now eating hot pot soup. I like Taiwan.
