Córdoba - The Meszquita Cathedral

The rain had cleared early this morning so it was off to the Mezquita Cathedral for the morning.  It was absolutely mind blowing.  The most striking element is the enormous prayer hall with about eight hundred and fifty double pillars giving the impression of a palm tree forest.  The main chapel and a swathe of smaller chapels are built into the arches of the Mosque.  The bell tower surrounds the minaret.  The combination of Islam and Christianity is incredible.  Of course, it is a minor religious battle ground.  Muslims have petitioned the Vatican and the Spanish government  to be allowed to pray there but in general it is not allowed.  One notable exception amongst the few that have been made was Saddam Hussein being given permission to pray at the Mihrab in 1974.

The bell tower and the Orange Garden.

For me, the most striking element of the Cathedral. This picture doesn't even hint at the space inside.
