Graaff Reinet

This morning dawned misty and cool with the mountains around the town hidden from view.

After a business meeting I spent some time wandering around the hill on the northern end of the town looking at birds and plants.  Leigh relaxed back at our digs catching up on her Spanish lessons.

Our planned tourist stuff for today eventually turned out to be a slow stroll through the town late this afternoon by which time the weather had cleared.  We have visited this area so often in the past that we couldn't think of anything we wanted to see.  None the less, it is a very historic and attractive town.  Graaff Reinet is the fifth oldest town in South Africa and is blessed with over 220 heritage sites, more than any other town in South Africa.  It has many magnificent examples of Cape Dutch architecture but the town also has some lovely buildings in an array of styles.

The Dutch Reformed Church which will be 230 years old next year.

Reinet House, the best of the four museums in the town, in my opinion.

Tomorrow we are heading for Nieu Bethesda, a town we have also visited often before.  However, it is more than twenty years since we were last there and apparently much has changed since then so I am looking forward to what it looks like now.
