In Ragusa

No riding today. We both needed a day off after yesterday—which was also our 11th consecutive day of riding.

I chose to spend my day wandering with my camera, while Al decided to eat and rest.  He also oiled the chains. The bikes are nicely lodged in the garage here and we were given the key. A perfect situation!

So the following is a photo dump. Instead of my usual chronological order, I’ve grouped them roughly by theme.

Theme 1:  San Giorgio (of dragon fame). I don’t know why he’s the patron saint of Ragusa, but the Duomo is dedicated to him and the Portal of San Giorgio is what’s left of the former church of San Giorgio, the rest of which was destroyed along with the former city of Ragusa in the great earthquake of 1693 that devastated so much of eastern Sicily.

Duomo de San Giorgio. The wrought iron fence (dated 1890) surrounds the main staircase so visitors climb these stairs on the side and enter through a small door.

Theme 2:  Architecture and Views

The Circolo di Conversazione is a pale blue building that was once the meeting place of the local elite, and in the Inspector Montalbano tv series, is the setting for Dottor Pasquano’s card games.

This blue dome attracted our attention as we rode down the hill through Ragusa Superiore and I finally got a good view of it.

View of Ragusa Ibla from Ragusa Superiore, specifically from the stairs that give pedestrians a more direct route than the narrow switchback road.

This looks like a big job but it will be beautiful again, I hope.

It seems the historic façade is to be preserved.

Keith AdamsAn excellent candidate for addition to the "Restoration and repair" theme, too... :)

Where we’re staying.

Where we’re eating tonight. It’s the setting for Trattoria di Calogero in the Inspector Montalbano tv series and that seemed as good a reason as any to choose it. Plus the fact it’s right across the street from our accommodation.

Garden wall of the restaurant’s patio, as we saw when we made our reservation.

These heads are everywhere; these particular ones decorate the wall outside a ceramic artist’s shop.
