Marktheidenfeld: A lovely ride

I thought I might be in Pokeno when we woke this morning. There was heavy fog and it didn't look as if it was going to lift any time soon. It was cold but we were well clad with 4 layers each and thick gloves so we were fine

Despite this we had a really great ride. There were barges going down the river and as yesterday the majority were working barges carrying massive loads of things like gravel up stream and coming down stream largely unloaded. We only saw one hotel boat and in the weather as it was everyone was inside. The frequent little villages and towns gave interest. Many of them today had an interesting old centres. After about 20km we stopped at one of our favourite backerie, the coffee was just as good for warming our hands as for satisfying our desire for coffee. The alluvial soil certainly seems good for growing things and there were some very productive vegetable gardens. One of the interesting things about Germany as compared to New Zealand is that you feel you are in the country then suddenly you come upon a massive industry. Being Germany these are always neat and well confined and then you are back in the country. At this stage we couldn't see what was on the land a little away from the river, we just couldn't see that far.

At Wertheim we decided we needed some lunch so in we went to the Aldstadt and found a cafe for soup and rolls. Fortified by this when we emerged the fog had gone and in its place was bright blue sky and some weak sun. Now we could see around us. There were steep hills on either side and on the south facing slopes vineyards. Things were looking very pretty with the sun on them and suddenly there were cyclists everywhere, perhaps they had been sensible enough to wait until the fog lifted before starting

Marktheidenfeld was our destination. We were far to early for our check in at 4pm so we walked the town had a beer and an icecream, found a wurst house for dinner and sat in the unaccustomed sun
