A Day in Berlin

We couldn't pass through Berlin without spending a day in it.  What a wonderful vibrant city it is.  Last evening we went around the corner to a little German Restaurant.  It wasn't a Worst Haus but Ken was in seventh heaven eating sausages, mashed potatoes, sauerkraut and drinking beer.  I feel we will be going to the same place tonight

With no clear plans we set off after breakfast and bought an all day public transport pass - if we did get horribly lost we could always call a taxi to get back to the hotel.  Down the hole into the underground the number of lines was massive and the names confusing.  We just hoped onto the first train that came along and got off at Alexanderplaza (I had heard the name before). It  is a big open space with shops all around.  First a coffee, now we are in Berlin we could have a coffee every few yards.  The place I like is the Back Factory - it is a Backerie chain with lots of yummy things and great big coffees much nicer than those in the usual

Berlin is bikers paradise. There are lots of different rental bikes the green one is an ebike of a group called Lime

Another group of rental bikes. As well as the weird spokes they don't have normal front forks just something supporting the wheel on one side

We saw a Saturn (great big electronic shop), I have been using my phone such a lot for route finding and that uses so much battery that I worry we may run out -so into Saturn and I got a Power Bank and that should solve any problem.

We felt that we couldn't come to Berlin without seeing Check Point Charlie.  I set my phone on it and we walked and walked and walked. It was fun walking along and just seeing people going about their everyday lives and whipping along on their bikes. We came to little squares, crossed rivers and when we eventually did get to Check Point Charlie there was no doubt where we were the crowd was massive, we were well back in tourist land

On this bike not only can you carry your little one on the front seat but also a big load

You can get your photo taken with the 'soldiers'. To prove you are in the American Zone there is a Mc Donalds

Don't leave your bike chained to a post too long or it will gradually disappear

Getting home was rather a challenge but we made it with a mixture of undergrounds and trams, it really was rather a miracle that we made it.

Ken has investigated our route out tomorrow - hopefully the place I have booked isn't too far so we can spend a lot of time going in circles
