Breaker Breaker We Have a Convoy

Up and Over The Main Range

Warwick to Boonah

After a very noisy night in a thin walled Warwick caravan park cabin adjacent to the New England Highway we had a close look at the map.

We were relieved to see we didn’t have to ride on the aforementioned truck laden highway. There was another reasonably safe, direct route option to Boonah by a combination of backroads and the Cunningham Highway.

It was an uneventful, pleasant ride until we crested The Main Range at Cunninghams Gap. A $134 million road repair and upgrade is in progress. We waited an hour chatting to some of the road crew, and then joined a convoy of very big trucks to slowly roll down the mountain. Two bicycles in slow moving queue of B-Doubles, SUVs towing vans and other miscellaneous heavy weights must have looked a bit odd.

From the base of the pass, it was a hilly but scenic pedal to the small rural town of Boonah. The area is distinguished by sheer escarpments, limestone peaks and other geological wonders.

Accommodation is a classic Qld pub. Spacious, cheap and rustic. Much better than last night.

The target tomorrow is Ipswich. We may finish riding there and jump on a suburban train.
