Best Day Yet, Saturday

Glorious Gravel

Not sure if Emerson Guest House offered breakfast but we left early and ate at the nearby gas station. Rob ran our destination on the Googler and came up with an alternative version that knocked off ten miles from the Champlain Bikeway route. I was all for it.

The route ended up being great. It was mostly gravel farm roads. At one point Google had us going through a trail that didn’t exist. We encountered a farmer who steered us around the woods. “That road hasn’t been there since 1923.” Thank you, sir. We rode past dairy farms and apple orchards with a few short sprints on Route 22. The day was overcast and cool, the hills were rolling and not too steep. Rob's 38 mm tires handled the gravel okay but he got squirrely once or twice.

We caught the ferry across Lake Champlain, pumped up one more hill and coasted into Ticonderoga, which was two miles from the ferry landing. We were both happy our little trip was over.
