I think now that we're revealing closely held secrets, the inside out underwear seems to be something a few of us do! Another one to add to longevity is to wear the 'evening after the shower' underwear for a couple of days and the inside out underwear for daytime riding.
I think I have missed out on a lot. We didn’t do our first bike tour until I turned 70. We had been addicted long distance walkers and wanted to walk the Via Frangigina (Canterbury to Rome) but it was going to take more than 90 days. What to do? Ken suggested that we ride it. I was horrified - I hadn’t ridden a bike since I was at University. Then at my 70 birthday party I said we were going to ride from London to Rome. I was committed and had 6 months to learn to ride again
That was 16 years ago and apart from the Covid years have had a significant tour in Europe each year and have now ridden over 36000 k there. How long it can continue I don’t know as we are aging a bit anyway we have booked our flights to Europe for August and will see what happens
Tricia that’s a wonderful story. Thanks for sharing it.
You might like reading about a remarkable Australian called Ernie Old. He took up long distance expedition riding in his 70s and became a national sensation.
A few years ago I saw a museum exhibition about Ernie and his cycling exploits, and was inspired to try to emulate a modified version of some of his capital city to capital city rides.
But I’m aiming to complete them by the time I’m 70. That’s when he began!
What an amazing story, Tricia. I'm going to keep you in my mental "inspiring people" file. I hope you keep riding as long as you want to be riding and that's what I hope for myself, too.
Ken and Tricia Graham are two of our inspirational role models, as are Suzanne Gibson and Janos Kertesz (not sure if that is spelled correctly). Both couples are still cycling well into their 80's, which gives us hope for another 10 cycling years for ourselves.
Scott you win. 3.07 years!
To paraphrase that Bruce Springsteen song,
“Baby we were Born to Ride” :)
