With regards to carrying money, in South Africa plastic is acceptable almost everywhere, even for very small purchases. I seldom have more than the equivalent of ten US dollars cash in my wallet at any time.

In 2015 we rode from Nairobi to Capetown staying more west first through Uganda then south toward Malawi and west through Botswana and Namibia then to Capetown South Afica. ( In 1994 we cycled Capetown to Nairobi staying more in East Africa). Africa Map
What is your timeframe? How long do you plan to travel in Africa?
I am interested in any information about bicycle touring in Africa. Specifically, which countries are safe, which may not be, and why. Recommendations for good sources of information are welcome.
Also of interest is access to money, how much money to carry, and perhaps how to legally protect it when touring. Areas where a tourist might become a target of thieves and how to avoid this scenario are also of interest. Thanks.
