Now in Formello

Today was a fun day but also a sad day.  We left our Italian home stay this morning on our way to Formello our 2nd last night.  It was a 60km ride with 50-50 tarmac and gravel.  There were also two really steep bits of 24% and 22%, the latter being quite long.  In between there several other small climbs followed by some lovely descents.  We passed an amphitheatre carved out of the rock that dates back to at least 150BC.  There is a debate as to whether it is Roman or Etruscan.  We had a lovely picnic lunch by a small lake after which we headed to our final destination.  Sadly on one of the fun downhills one of our group had a nasty crash and she is now at an Italian hospital awaiting assessment and surgery.  She has at a minimum a severely lacerated face and a possible fractured cheekbone but there may be more, we are awaiting information.  As for us we had a lovely pizza dinner and are now chilling in a great hotel.

CRASH UPDATE: no broken bones just lots of bruising.  They have kept her overnight for observation.👏👏👏

The town of Sutri where the amphitheater is. We rode a rail up to a park above the amphitheater to get a better look.

The amphitheater that was carved out of rock as opposed to being built by layering rocks

We took a short break at this waterfall.

The name of the waterfall is Gelato which translated means icy cold not ice cream.

My pizza at dinner. It was quite a different crust, almost like a water cracker.

There is a roof top bar at our hotel so we had a glass of wine after dinner under a full moon.
