Day 4 St. Augustine to Yulee

Today was really fun. We left St. Augustine at 7:15 after the hotel desk clerk came out to hear about our trip and admire the bikes.

Our ride kept us along the Atlantic coast most of the way. Riding on A1A north of St. Augustine, we saw a number of other cyclists. When we took a break at a convenience store near Guana River State Park, there were several cyclists there. We had a great time talking to them about our trip. They gave us directions to the local Target (more on which later) and a very good local bike shop - Champion Cycling.

Kerry forgot the bring a Velcro strap which secures the bike pump to the top tube. He had looked a couple of places, but hadn't found anything that would work. We went to Champion and talked to Jonathan. After a few tries, he came a strap that worked well. He insisted on giving it to us for free. I think cyclists are just all around fine people and Jonathon really helped us today.

We cycled north from Jacksonville Beach to Mayport and took the ferry across the St. John's River to Amelia Island. The fare is $1 for a bicycle. The girl collecting the fares looked at our tandems and remarked "I guess that counts as one bike." and we each paid our dollar. Yes,a tandem is one bike!

Just after we got off the ferry we stopped for lunch at the Sandollar Restaurant. It was my favorite meal of the trip so far. The blackened salmon was as good as any salmon I've ever had. We large table with comfortable padded chairs which our cycling bodies (especially parts of our bodies)really appreciated. It was a very relaxing lunch - more relaxing for some of us than others!

Viktoriya and I have been wanting something cool to keep the sun off our legs. We have arm cooling sleeves that work great, but nothing for our legs. We did some interesting improvising with paper towels and handkerchiefs, but needed a better option. At Target, we found these yellow jackets made of quick dry wicking material on sale and bought them in XL. A pair of scissors converted the jackets to vests and gave us leg "sleeves". I think they are going to be perfect!
