Day 11 Ormond Beach

We had a chilly, but pleasant ride today along the Atlantic coast.  When we left St. Augustine, it was 46 degrees.  All of us wore multiple layers and except for a few cold toes and fingers, stayed warm enough not to be really uncomfortable.  By the time we reached Ormond Beach, it was all the way up to 52!  Cold snaps are very brief in Florida, though, and when we get to Tavares tomorrow, it should be about 70.

Almost all the route today was on A1A.  There is a bike lane most of the way.  There were a few rough spots with construction and sand over the road, but we didn't have any significant problems.  The views of the ocean were beautiful.  We can now say we have ridden Florida coast to coast on this trip. JS

We weren't up for much sightseeing in the brisk weather, but we took a short detour to get a closer look at the St. Augustine Lighthouse, across the Bridge of Lions from the city.

We were so fortunate to have a tailwind.  Any time the road went more easterly, we froze!  We met some hardy souls from Canton, Ohio...they were cycling into the wind and camped last night!

The map doesn't show this unless you enlarge it, but we were on islands that make up the edge of the Intracoastal Waterway and the Mantanzas River.

We braved the wind because the 7 Eleven didn't have any seating. FG

Flagler Beach stop ( Henry Flagler brought the railroad to Florida and it was his mansion that became the Lightner Museum we visited yesterday!)

Our hotel in Ormond Beach is oceanfront and this is the view from our room. JS
