Day 8 - ending at Moberly, MO

Posted via email Wed May 22 07:25:02 2013 PDT

Awake and up at 6:35am. Grabbed some coffee from the breakfast area and went back to work on report and packing. Also studied maps. Enjoyed the Continental Breakfast at 9:00am in the breakfast area: bowl of cereal, bagel, roll, orange juice, and coffee.

Checked out and left and at 9:57am. Rode back into town to the Dollar General Store for batteries and food. Talked with a gentleman outside. Seems like half the people I meet are from central Illinois. I found a new way to store cans of Beanee Weenees on my bike (inside my rolled up mattress pad).

Left at 10:20am south on MO-15, heading for Paris. Took picture of Shelbina's library as I passed. Not bad riding today - the wind seemed to be from the southwest rather than straight from the south.

I stopped on the bridge over Crooked Creek to call my wife and see how our younger son's first day of his first job went (great - they even took him out to lunch).

There was road work on MO-15 in Paris when I got there at 1:03pm, so decided to take US-24 west instead. Followed that to SR-C, where I turned south. I wanted to see Union Covered Bridge. Arrived there at 3:02pm. Some of the bridge's siding is gone, removed to save the bridge from being swept away during a flash flood, I'd read. The bridge isn't open to traffic any more, but there is a bypass, when the water's low. The water didn't look low to me today.

I crossed on the bridge and headed back south toward SR-C. My destination was Finger Lakes State Park, north of Columbia. Nearing the intersection with SR-M, I stopped to reconsider. Maybe it would be better to go west today and south tomorrow. Kris had emailed camping locations for all around, including in Moberly. Decided to go for it, and turned west.

Arrived in Moberly at 8:10pm. Further into town, I noticed a bike path paralleling the road, so hopped on. This path took me all the way downtown. Got a little lost after that, looking for Rothwell Park. Found it at 8:55pm. It took more looking in the park to find Thompson Campground, where I finally arrived at 9:12pm. Called the ranger, and was checked-in for site #24 at 9:30pm.

Got set up, ate supper (Beanee Weenees, the rest of the sandwich cookies from home, and ginger snaps), worked on report as long as I could, then fell asleep.

------------

Spent: $12.12 (ginger snaps, Beanee Weenees, batteries, ChapStick) + $8 (campsite) = $20.12.
