Day 85 Chesterfield VA to Williamsburg VA

Today was the day we got back on the bikes to start our journey home. We left Scott and Beth’s and can’t thank them enough for letting us stay at their house even though they were not there. It had rained all night so everything was wet and the temp was already 71°. Off we went. We had to bike 27 miles before we came to the bike trail which would take us all the way into Williamsburg. It rained on and off most of the day which is such a pain but for 33 miles of not being on the road was worth it. We had to go over a drawbridge that was real scary for me. It was a grated bridge so we walked the bikes across. The bridge was longer than most grated bridges that I have walked across and I gave out lots of Sunday thank you’s to the cars that went by us with caution. We stopped for lunch and I was able to get a great salad. Greens! Maybe we are now in the part of the country where I will be able to get them more often. Back on the trail again. We came upon an old pay phone where the handle was still attached. Hubs stopped to call to see if he could get us an Uber but it didn’t go through. 😜. We rode by a beautiful house and a building that do wedding events. I had to take a picture of the mile marker just to show that we actually rode through the Sherwood Forest. I kept looking for Robin Hood and his Merry Men but didn’t find them. Darn!!We

This was the grated bridge we had to cross. Actually, I don’t think we really were supposed to be on it

had another bridge to go over but this one had a bike lane. We crossed the James river. As we rode on, a couple were riding toward us and the guy pointed at me and yelled “Awesome” and kept riding. We did too and then we heard someone singing. It turns out there was a cafe called Spokes and Art. We pulled in to listen to the singer and next thing you know the couple that pointed at us had pulled in also. We started chatting and Mark said he just did a cross country ride in May. He went from Washington DC to Oregon. He asked if he could buy us a beer and of course Hubs won’t refuse that. So in we went. They were closing in about 15 minutes but were told we could sit outside as long as we want. So Lana, Mark, Hubs and I sat and enjoyed our drinks. As we were chatting Hubs noticed a biker going by with panniers on his bike and he yelled to him. He turned around and came back. His name is Colin and he is from England. I hope he has a wonderful  adventure.   The 4 of us got back on our bikes and started riding together. I was telling Lana that I couldn’t wait to get out of my sticky clothes. She said “ I have only been riding 15 miles and I feel like a Swamp Ass,” and I don’t know how you do it day after day. I thought that was hysterical. We got into Williamsburg later than usual and when we got into the hotel, they couldn’t find our reservation. Hubs made it through Traveluro.com. We had the confirmation but it wasn’t in their system. Lesson learned. Only use the well known 3rd party hotel bookings. So we had to pay again for a room. Tomorrow we head to Suffolk VA.

Today's ride: 62 miles (100 km)
Total: 345 miles (555 km)
