Bad Tölz to Gauting - Winter Tour redux - 2025 - CycleBlaze

Bad Tölz to Gauting

We woke up to more fine weather. Breakfast was at eight, and we weren't in a hurry. We would be home when we got there, an hour earlier or later would make no difference.  Again we were regaled with an impressive breakfast spread, including a chilled sparkling white wine. I didn't expect any of the cyclists in the breakfast room to want wine to start out the day, but they did! I was happy with a fried egg and tea. Janos didn't feel tempted either.

We were riding a new route, or at least not the route we rode in February. I'm not sure if this route is really entirely new since we have often traveled south via Bad Tölz. We started out directly on the Isar, and then we had left it before I thought to get a photo. All I can say is that the river at Bad Tölz is very wide and very green. We didn't see it again until we crossed the Marienbrücke 25 km later at Wolfratshausen.

We were both pleasantly surprised by how lovely the countryside was that we were riding through, again fields, meadows and hazy views to the mountains.

Wild flowers dot the meadows.

The hay tedders are out to turn the hay for drying.

Again a hazy day and the mountains are just faint outlines. Pretty anyway.

Farm buildings, or perhaps they were once farm buildings where the living quarters were in the front of the building and the stalls for the animals in the back. Now it looks like it has all been converted to living quarters, maybe for tourists. They are more lucrative than cows.

We stopped in Königsdorf which I remembered from a previous trip. However, I didn't find or recognize what I remembered. Janos pointed out that we were standing in front of exactly the same building that I described to him. Funny how one's memory can distort and change earlier impressions. The building was small and I didn't even notice it this time, but what I remembered was a charming farm house smothered in an abundance bright flowers.

Outside the church, a plaque commemorating the victims of WWII from the parish of Königsdorf , killed or missing in action

Last time, we rode through Wolfratshausen after descending the steep road down to the valley of the Isar. This time we will have to climb out of the Isar valley. We decided to ride further on and ascend at Schäftlarn. I'm not sure if the climb is less steep there or at Wolfratshausen, the traffic was my main concern.

Crossing to the right bank of the Isar near Wolfratshausen.

This smooth and straight path can take you to Munich. Our 8 km on it were enjoyable, but then it was enough.

We stopped for lunch at the Aumühle, a lovely little beer garden and then we had a short stretch along the Isar canal before crossing to the other side of the river for our climb. There weren't too many cars and once at the top we knew we would soon be home.

Janos also had no trouble with his battery. When he ran out of battery on our winter tour we think it might have been the cold that reduced its capacity or else a setting that Janos had changed. Apparently there is a regulation stipulating that at least 6% must be reserved for the bicycle's light. Janos had this adjusted to less and also rides without a light in the daytime now. At any rate, when we got home his battery showed 35%.

Kloster Schäftlarn - we didn't stop for a look this time. Our steeds smelled the stable and we weren't interested in another church now.

In February we were dodging patches of snow on this path through the woods.

Janos's video says it all.

Back to this morning at our hotel, a family run place. The young man at check-out, always helpful but a bit taciturn, asked where we were headed today. When we said Gauting, just ten km north of Lake Starnberg, he was in awe. Not because it was far, but because we have the luxury of riding to and from our front door. Purer luxus he said repeatedly, purer luxus. And we believe so, too. It is pure luxury to have such awesome cycling in the immediate surroundings.

So that is one more mini-tour for the books. We are glad that we made the effort to get out on our bikes on short notice. The weather was perfect and in the coming weeks we have things to look after that will keep us tied to home for a while.

Thanks for following along!
