K2 Trek Day 7: Urdukus (4050m) to Goro II (4380m)

Continuing up the Baltoro Glacier

11 September 2023

We continue trekking up the undulating Baltoro Glacier. Another tough day's walk. In some ways the footing becomes a little easier as the roacks become smaller and smaller.

Looking down the valley towards Paiyu Peak. The engraved plates are memorials to climbers, guides and porters that died on these mountains.

Memorial to an Austrian climber who died on Broad Peak. Climbing these mountains is serious business.if you google him you can find a wiki on his climbing accomplishments and how he died from exhaustion on the top of the mountain.

We walk up the center of the glacier, following cairnes. Sometimes the guides have to go ahead searching for a route that has changed. The glacier is living and moving.

We get great views of Muztagh Tower, Gasherbrum and Masherbrum.

Summit of Masherbrum peaks over the ridge to our south. It looks massive, but it is only a small part of this mountain. See later pictures.

We are passing more icewalls today and see the first seracs where the pressure inside the glacier forces ice ridges skyward. Here we are getting ready to cross a crevasse.

Mules headed down. In the summer months there is a lot of traffic here resupplying the expedition base camps at the mountains.

Our camp at Goro 2. Tonight is our first night camping on the glacier: sleeping on the glacier is cold. It is a bit unnerving to hear the glacier groan and crack somewhere far below.

The mule guys prefer to bake their chapaties over an open fire. No tents either for them, they sleep between low rock walls covered only by a tarp.
