The Great Dismal Swamp

Elizabeth City to Bowers Hill, VA

Today dawned beautiful and off we rode toward the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia!

We are back on the East Coast Greenway and it does not disappoint!

Small Swamp before the Big Swamp!

A little side trip we took by mistake! Oops!

Sure pretty though.

Big homes.

We ended up on the west side of the canal and we needed to be on the east side so we turned around.

Here it is! The bike path along the GDS!

We had lunch by the canal.

We stopped to read the signs about how the canal was built by slaves. Dug by hand at first!

It was widened with machinery years later.

Very nice.

We hopped up on 17 for seven miles and it had a nice shoulder. Then we turned off onto this old canal path/road. It is closed to cars. There was a Death March ending and the path was closed until noon. We got there at 12:07!

This was the place tolls were collected. It was taken over by the soldiers during the civil war

This guy was at the end of the Death March! There are bears and beavers and river otters in the GDS!

Stopped at Food Lion for groceries and then headed for our hotel - Bowers Hill Inn - $50. Everything else is $155 and above!
