Day 50 - Bad Bachau to Ravensburg

On this day we were nervous about thundershowers in the afternoon, but it was a relatively cool day through the morning (less than 30 C) and when it heated up in the afternoon we were arriving at Ravensburg since the pedal wasn't too long.

Apparently Einstein's parents lived here until the year before he was born. I don't know if this is the only claim to fame for Bad Bachau

Following the path laid out by RWGPS, we have very good paths and roads as we leave town

As we leave Bad Bachau we are following a bike path next to a main road. We are not on any established radweg, but there are always good paths to follow when going cross country as we are

We discover some active logging going on

The log piles lasted for about half a km

When they ended, we met a tractor bringing in the next load from the forested area

It was some kind of resort for groups learning about the history of the area

As we were getting fairly near to Ravensburg, we came to the Basilica St Martin in Weingarten.  Apparently a Basilica outranks Cathedrals and churches.  It was really something with all the paintings on walls and ceilings.  Hope you will forgive all the pictures, I will caption only a few of them.

It was really colorful and ornate, pretty worth the time and effort to cycle up to it.

The photograph doesn't really pick it up, but the alps came into view

We were into Ravensburg by 2 PM so we had a couple of hours to kill while our warm showers host finished work and could meet us.  Ravensburg is full of towers and is also famous for the games company named after it.

Erika took over the camera and enthusiastically took lots of pictures

Ravensburg was of no strategical significance during WW2 so escaped any major bombing. As a result, most of the old town was left intact. The town had be walled at one time and at least 7 of the towers and gates are still standing.

Most of us are familiar with Ravensburg puzzles and games. This is probably the biggest puzzle I have ever seen. Don't think I would want to try to do it.

Our wonderful host, Achim, made us a wonderful meal at dinner time. Achim is a social worker/counselor. He was going mountain climbing for the weekend after work the next day.

While we are on this trip life at home continues. One of the things we are still having to deal with is getting things in place for moving to a new home shortly after returning to Canada. We are not in the position where a lot of paper work needs to be done in preparation for the move. Achim's generous willingness to let us use his home and internet, gave us the time and space we needed to get a lot of that work done. We will always be grateful.

Today's ride: 45 km (28 miles)
Total: 2,013 km (1,250 miles)
