Day 43 - We begin the Donau Radweg! Donaueschingen to Tuttlingen

Lots of Big Stories today

First hint of a BIG story comes when you look at the elevation profile for the day:

Does it look like there is a castle at the end of the ride?

Our track for the day shows the temperature getting up to 33 C a couple of times.  Not bad.  And we didn't run into any thundershowers

We started the day by leaving beautiful Donaueschingen on the Donau Radweg

This is the symbol we will follow to Ulm.

On the previous picture you could note the signage for the princely estates. This is part of the garden areas just off the trail

We pass by the turnoff to the confluence we visited 2 days ago

the donau radweg is beautiful every which way you look at it. Here you can see some effect of the rain that came after we got back to the b&b last night. It makes things very refreshing

Oh my! Will Erika have to face off with this service vehicle in the path? Where is Dodie when we need her?

We can already see our first cute little town in the distance

Our first crossing of the Donau

Bench of the day! Kind of early in the day, but such a pretty setting and shade

Storks have been a regular occurrence on this trip. We see them pretty much every day. They are really big birds, bigger than geese and I'm sure they outweigh the herons

Signs like this, we love. Only 30 km more to our target for the day, Tuttlingen

Every town looks so inviting, we wish we could spend lots of time in every one.

On a hot day, we just keep moving and the breeze and scenery like this is soothing

Another town in the distance, we are in a broad valley

So beautiful! And the scenery is great too!

These decorative fountains are so refreshing looking

The sadness of a local war memorial

Our friend Umleitung makes an appearance. This time the detour was well marked all the way

Another decorative fountain. We love roosters. We also love what is on the wall behind the rooster to the right

We have been seeing these from time to time, a wonderful improvement to the trails. Also WC's show up from time to time

This we don't like to see. It was right across the street

This is the plaque that was on the Rathaus that had the water fountain for us

We were surprised and tickled to come to this covered bridge
Heart 0 Comment 0
And a lovely carving inside of it
Heart 0 Comment 0
And the bridge, of course, is over the Donau

Immendingen

Another covered bridge!

We stop for some refreshing apfel shorle and order some lunch too

We were really relaxed at this stop just after Immendingen but our order must have been misplaced because it took them about 45 minutes before we finally got our food

Here is something else we have seen more than once lately. If we were in a pinch we could plug in. They seem very proud in this region of the effort they are making to accommodate cyclists including e-bikes

The river bed was dry at this point as you will see
Heart 0 Comment 0
We are at the first sinking area, just beyond Immendingen

In trying to understand the German, Erika thinks that the lower mark is high water in a normal year
Heart 0 Comment 0
Look, Erika is standing in the middle of the river, just like I did way upstream a few days ago. Except I was up to my knees in water.

Look at the peak of the building

Look at what they have done with the woodpile. We just love creative approaches to wood stacking

We have reached Tuttlingen, pretty early in the day. This is one of the river crossings in the middle of a long river park

Just look at the flowers lining this boulevard

Quite a few rather modern art pieces even suspended ones

Fairly ornate carved wood doors

We have set up our tent in a free tenting area in the middle of the parkland (free to cyclists only for one night's stay). Then we brought the bikes back into town without their heavy loads so they could have some fun too :)

This was the protestant church we had just gone into

Remember that elevation profile at the beginning of this day's blog?  Well in the next picture I am looking down on the city from the top of a hill with a ruined castle on it.  We wanted to see the ruins, it was a 1.7 km climb with an average grade of 6% but went as high as 17.5%.  Erika has become a real hill climber on the bike this trip.  We would never have done it 4 years ago

This picture was taken last after we had explored the ruins, but I put it first to illustrate what we had accomplished to get up there.  Even with e-bikes it is real work, since the e-bike gives you assistance proportional to the effort you are putting in.  That is the way these touring e-bikes are set up.

I have to say at this point, this is what I really love about these e-assist bikes:  You put in a big day's effort every day and you are able to do things you would never be able to do otherwise.

A more zoomed in view of the city from up on the castle hill

Further stories of the day:  After coming down from the castle, we went back to the big park that had our tenting area in it.  A short ride from the tent brought us to a big swimming facility, partly indoor and partly outdoor.  It was a large pool complex with a number of different features, indoors was several pools including a laps pool, a really big long tube slide, very fast, I did it 3 times, also one of those circular runs with jets making the water flow very fast, the fastest we have ever seen.  We had a lot of fun in that.  It was hard getting out of it for that matter :)

But the real treat was the outdoor area with various kinds of powerful bubble jets that made the whole experience feel like a spa.  In fact, we discovered, the water was hot spring water, full of minerals that were supposed to be very good for you.  But the water was crystal clear and odorless, there didn't even seem to be chlorine in it.  It was still warmer than normal swimming pool water, although it had cooled quite a bit from when it first comes from underground.  Man what a way to relax at the end of a day.

Tu Wass in Tuttlingen is what you can look at.

I am telling you, Tuttlingen is on our list of places to come back to !

Today's ride: 46 km (29 miles)
Total: 1,692 km (1,051 miles)
