Port Jervis, NY to Highland, NY:

It's not Poughkeepsie, but you can see it from here.

Our route out of Port Jervis followed Neversink Creek and although it was very scenic it had signs detailing places where settlers were killed or wounded by Indians led by Chief Joseph Brant. It was not a cheery start to the day, but Adventure Cycling routed us along scenic rolling roads. There was a moderate amount of traffic but usually a shoulder and courteous drivers for the most part.

A shot of one if the pretty farms we passed. We think the Shawngunk Mountain is behind the farm. We crossed it at a lower elevation near OtisvilleEven the railroad train cheated by cutting through a tunnel.

The roads were like this most of the day ... no shoulder but little traffic and great scenery.

Rhona got excited entering New Paltz when she saw an organic restaurant. It turns out it is a college town so there were more small exotic restaurants than you could count. What ever happened to all the pizza joints from my college day's? This was apparently either art or an attempt to preserve a part of building when the whole building could not be saved.

Rhona scouted out lodging at the AtlasMotor Lodge in Highland over the internet. It is Mom N Pop owned. When we arrived he hurried to clean a larger room to accomodate our tandem.

Today's ride: 57 miles (92 km)
Total: 585 miles (941 km)
