Bamberg - A Miraculous Tour Around France and Germany - CycleBlaze

Bamberg

Last night we had a great and cheap meal at the Brauhaus. I seem to have become addicted to German fried potatoes and hunt the menu for any meal that contains them The Brauhaus was really humming and we were very lucky to get a table. We then sat very smugly and watched lots of potential clients being turned away. Speaking to the waitress she said things were always hectic from when they open at 11am till when they close at 11pm

As we left this morning we got a very different view from the industrial one we got yesterday. First it was down through the pleasant market square where a market was being set up. During World War 2 Schweinfurt made all the ballbearings that were required for the war effort. Because of this it was extremely heavily bombed so the market square although very attractive doesn't contain any really old buildings

Today was a very pleasant ride without the excitement of yesterday. We were riding on smooth tracks largely beside the river. Although there were some grapes on the south facing slopes these were not nearly as extensive as those of yesterday and we weren't up among them to experience the frenetic activity of yesterday

Hassfurt was the biggest town we came to and there we got a coffee from the Rewi supermarket. Ken went in on one of his chocolate hunts and came out with a huge grin on his face. As a decoration in the fruit and vegetable department they had an old Eicher tractor covered in pumpkins. What could be better?

Some kilometres from Bamberg the Main Danube Canal leaves the Main. This is a really massive canal between the two rivers. It flows through Nuremberg, we have seen it previously at the other end where it joins the Danube. Bamberg when we got there was full of Tourists so it was not surprising that it was difficult to get a room and it was very expensive. It is a most attractive old town which was spared the bombing in WW2 and sits on and between the banks of the canal and the Regnitz River. We will stay two nights here and tomorrow go on an unladen ride along the canal
