29: world globe, squares, the trifecta, shrimp

Savannah suburb to Savannah

Bill texted me this morning asking if I'd like to get together for lunch, and maybe to check out Savannah's many squares. I jumped at the opportunity, and packed up as quickly as I could because there was something I wanted to see on the way into town.

My Point of Interest on the way into Savannah this morning is the World Globe Storage Tank. It was originally a natural gas storage tank, and was painted in 1956 to resemble a classroom globe.

In 1998 it was repainted to mimic the earth as seen from space, then again in 2023.

It has since become the most unique Starbucks drive-through - people order their drinks on one side, then drive around the planet to pick them up.

one of the many nonBaptist churches

On my way into town I passed three Baptist churches within one mile. That's three Baptist churches, not three churches. That doesn't include all of the others. Each of the Baptist churches was of a different denomination, which shouldn't be too surprising considering there are more than sixty denominations. Some of them have great names, and I'll share with you some of my favorites:
Two-Seed-in-the-Spirit Predestinarian Baptists
Duck River and Kindred Baptists
General Six-Principle Baptists
Hard Shell Baptists

We decided to meet at Forsyth Square at 10:00 and ended up pedaling around trying to see as many squares as possible. I took some pictures, but none of them turned out very well because everything was mottled in the sunlight, and the shadows made for poor images.

The chairs appear to be outside, but are actually indoors. This appears to be a beautiful venue.

We stopped for lunch where I somehow managed to avoid completely purging myself, but it was difficult.

Around 3:00 we took one last picture together before they needed to head back. By the time we split up we had seen almost all of the 22 squares and, more importantly, Bill had hit his Trifecta:  a bakery, a beer, and some ice cream, something he attempts to do daily. I believe this to be a worthy goal.

I headed to my hotel, checked in, then went for a walk.

Laura SeiditaI loved the squares in Savannah and would ride around them on the weekend - especially in the spring during azalea season.

Many memories here - it's where I got my first "real" bike and started riding recreationally with a local club.
