Nothing but the real thing: Day 5 - Princeton to Merritt

Today was what cycle touring is all about. This is starting to sound repetitious ..... We woke up to a perfect morning, cool and not a cloud in the sky. We had breakfast in us and camp packed up by 7:30 and we headed north on highway 5a.

Wow. Beautiful serene valley, ranches, horses, deer with velvet still on their antlers running along side us (this sounds like some kind of fancy bathroom tissue add, but I'm not making this stuff up).

Forty five minutes before the first automobile comes past us. Sixty five km's of this bliss until we hit the 4-lane Kelowna connector. This wasn't too bad as traffic was light and the shoulders are wide and in good shape. Put on the tunes and raced down into Merritt just as the heat was starting to build (the last 6 km's are a 6% downhill shot straight into Merritt.

The bright side of hitting the connector highway was that it made me think that we might just get a better day over the next few months. Without that I was thinking that we hit the peak on day five based on the 65 km's on the 5a!

The pictures tell the real story.

Song of the day

Home by Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros

...... Home is where ever I'm with you ....

day 5 on the road and it's starting to feel like this. Honourable mention to Back in the USSR by the Beatles..... Just sounded great screaming down the hills into Merrit

Still working on the historic moment of the day .... Could end up being 'recent' history - the first Dairy Queen visit of the trip!

These beautiful mornings are becoming repetitive

Bridge over the Similkemeen river on the Kettle Valley Rail line cycle trail. A little more of an off road trail through the interior of BC. It's on the list....

Heavy traffic on 5a this morning north of Princeton, commuters are recommended to take alternate routes

The route was a gradual climb with most of it 1-2% with a few slightly steeper sections

It just kept getting better. The whole valley was filled with a series of small meadows and shallow lakes. All of them were like glass today

It wasn't all gentle rolling hills, there were a few steeper hills but we got to them when it was still early in the day and relatively cool
