Belle Riverie Campground to Montjean sur-Loire

Departed this excellent campsite eager to explore the Loire Valley and the route didn’t disappoint.

We enjoyed a leisurely ride to Mauves-sur-Loire and as we were about to take the bridge across the river to follow the official trail, a local couple approached us on their bikes and told us to stay on the north side as there is an unmarked trail directly along the river’s north side and a much better route. It certainly was and it sounds like we avoided some hills as well. We also discovered that we were a few metres from the very busy train tracks.

The octagonal castle tower in Oudon greeted us as we arrived. Its imposing presence atop a cliff dominates the small town and is a reminder of Oudon’s fierce defensive past. Built in the 14th century, the remains of the fortified Keep provide a wonderful view along the Loire...so we enjoyed our baguette lunch picnic on the slope enjoying where we were.

The famous poet, Joachim du Bellay, a favoured figure in this region, made his home in this area. There are many remembrances of him, including the statue as you approach Ancenis.

The trail was at times single track and a bit challenging for a loaded bike with a trailer. The stone wall on the right and the train tracks on the left left little room for error.
When we arrived at the campground in Montjean sur-Loire we were very happy to see that the dutch couple that we had met at the Belle Riverie campground last night were also staying at this campground. They invited us to their campsite for a visit. They had gone out on and bought local french wine and things to eat. We celebrated meeting again and toasted their ten year old grandson whose
birthday it was today. We had a wonderful evening visiting with our new friends.

We met this couple on the route today. They were both riding recumbent bikes. He had a dutch bike- Nazca-and was pulling a trailer like ours. She was riding a M5-another dutch recumbent
