Furano - Six wheels through Japan - CycleBlaze

Furano

Geared up and ready to go…kind of. We are both still tired from yesterday. This Guesthouse is great, owned by a local fellow who grew up here and it offers everything you need for a reasonable price. We get an awesome view of the mountains from our window.

Across the across the road is grander accommodation, a German Inn. We see that the motorcycle group are staying there.

This happy character is a figure that represents this community and it’s likeness is everywhere.

Our room is modest with a unique approach to providing a bathroom. We are okay with this as hotel rooms in Japan are often quite small and a dedicated bathroom greatly reduces the living space.

Barry BartlettIndeed. Initially we thought it was strange but after being there a while, we agreed it was ok…but yes, strange. We had a room earlier on the trip that was small and made smaller by the the bathroom. We both ended up with bruises, especially 6’2 Barry.

The guests have a well stocked kitchen which makes self catering easy. This is good for us.

Plus a place to eat. Downstairs, there is a lounge and areas to relax.

We have ridden up to the base of the ski hill. In reading about winter here, it sounds like it would be a winter wonderland…very cold and heavy snowfalls. Blizzards are common here.

The air inFurano has a unique reaction to the extreme cold temperatures experienced here.it is called Diamond Dust as ice crystals hover in the air. It sounds like a beautiful thing to see.

I guess that makes sense, but it could be fun.

The valley of Furano is lush and so green against the backdrop of the snow covered mountains.

We asked at the tourist office for their recommendation of a Ramen restaurant. Furano is famous for their ramen. Barry had a delicious miso broth/pork ramen

Mary Ellen had the butter/corn ramen. Both of our ramens had a small dollop of grated ginger on top.

We rounded out the meal with delicious gyozas. We have finally found a place to compare with the Ramen place we loved in Kagoshima on Kyushu.

Ramen restaurants require constant prep-the chef is hard at work.

Our time in Furano has been so enjoyable. Just riding around and taking in the scenery is all the entertainment we need here. A beautiful laid back place.
