Day 3: In Annecy

Three of us ride around the lake

We have planned three days in Annecy before we move on. Today we have a brilliant sunny day with a brisk, chilly wind for a ride around Lac d'Annecy. We are riding only with Susan, Scott and Rachael have business to attend to and won't be joining us. You can catch up with what the Andersons are up to here.

Janos and I ride to Les Jardins d'Europe with some time to spare for pictures and just poking around before we meet up with Susan at ten.

Looking across the street to the entrance to our hotel. Annecy has an excellent bicycle infrastructure with many marked paths.

Susan and I apparently had different ideas as to where we would meet. WhatsApp to the rescue. We aren't far from each other and Susan rides over to where we are standing. At a quarter past ten we are on the voie verte that circles the lake.

Here she comes.

We see there are plenty of cyclists at the beginning of the veloroute but soon the crowds thin out. The views are spectacular and as we head south we have a tailwind. As you can see in the pictures, the path is wide and smooth. A perfect day.

When we reach the southern tip of the lake, we take a sharp left and on the east side of the lake the character of the ride changes. First of all, as was to be expected we have a headwind. The views are still lovely but the path is now narrower and next to the road. For the last third of the ride we have a bike lane on the road. Not dangerous, just not as peaceful as the beginning. Then comes the surprise. That bump on the elevation profile that I had ignored turns out to be quite a climb. It isn't bad, I like a bit of climbing, but it was unexpected.

Steve Miller/GrampiesEspecially Dodie would dislike riding on the lake side of the path. With increasing age she has experienced some wobbliness when riding and would probably stop every time in the face of oncoming riders. This can make for slow to no progress when the full season is on.

Scott AndersonIt really was a beautiful day. This makes me wish I'd gone along after all, but we had business to attend to. I love the shadows of the pollarded trees in Janos' video!
