March 8, 2023 - So where is my REAL Starting Point?

Cochrane, Ontario, Canada

A few Canadians will recognize this logo. I won't wander in to whether or not their offerings are 'good'; that for another day. However, Cochrane was Tim Horton's (the person) home town. As a youngster his father used to shovel a patch of the lake's icy surface in the winter so the fledgling hockey player could practice his on-ice skills. And yes, though it took a while, we have our own Timmies restaurant, too. -- Cochrane, ON

My true starting point is home, here in Cochrane, Ontario. Cochrane is a town located in northeastern Ontario about 750 km straight north of Toronto along highway 11, aka Yonge Street, where it turns from north-south to east west, and heads out toward the Manitoba border (more than 1000 km away). The town is home to the famous Cochrane Polar Bear Habitat, a research and education centre dedicated to the conservation of polar bears. Cochrane is also known for its railway history as it was the junction point with the Temiskaming & Northern Ontario and National Transcontinental Railway.

Though the winter makes for a lack of cycling, with all of this snow, there are winter activities to keep in shape.

... but when the snow melts, oh my, there is beautiful cycling. In the centre of town is Lake Commando, and we are lucky to have a house amongst the trees overlooking the lake.

All of this to say... currently things look a lot like the first photo and I am dreaming of the second one. My bike tour will allow me to cheat a bit.

Forty-eight days and counting...
