ISN'T it wonderful? Indiana still has a law against "the abominable and detestable crime against nature."

I assume it means the prohibition of picking wild flowers. But, then again, Indiana is where Alfred Kinsey started his research into the sexual habits of Americans, which concluded that they had them, quite vociferously and sometimes (for the 1950s) distinctly kinky, m'dear. (Hint for the truly innocent: I think the law refers to the Solitary Vice.)

The people who live here are called Hoosiers. Nobody agrees on why. What is uncontested is that signs and advertisements everywhere use the word. And what a dirty lot they must have been. Until the 1950s, not bathing regularly could get you 15 years in jail.
