To Nyjkerk

Last night we ate at the hotel. They were booked out inside so we sat outside with blankets and heaters. This is clearly a very popular place on a Saturday night and we thoroughly enjoyed our Tapas meal

This morning after ‘the drama of the lost bike key’ we negotiated the steep spiral stairs for the last time and were off.  This first part of the day was through through very pleasant but I unexciting countryside and attractive small towns. The weather was very overcast with just the nearest hint of gentle rain  At this time on a Sunday morning there seemed to be no place where we could get a coffee or something to eat for breakfast (a glass of water and a stale roll doesn’t really count for breakfast). We were bowling along and then I saw it a board on the cycle path beside some trees saying ‘Coffee Open’. It is really amazing how I spot these and Ken doesn’t . He seesancient tractors that I dont.  Anyway up the long beautiful drive way we went and  when we got to this glorious place we saw they had the red carpet out for us.  We had arrived at Kassel de Essenburg We were served a coffee and a huge slice of delicious apple cake with a massive dollop of whipped cream topped with a raspberry.  Here we meet two Dutch people also staying there, they were also touring so I appealed for information and have  a wonderful sounding place to go to tomorrow

They have the red carpet out for us

Shortly after we left the main road and were once more beside an arm of the sea.  In better weather this is clearly and area for lots of seaside activity boating, swimming and small sandy beaches.  Today in this weather it all looked a bit sad and the huge car parks were empty

It started to rain a little more so we stopped under shelter of a garage for tea.  Soon it became clear the rain was not going to stop any time soon so we had better go.  We turned onto a very exposed cycle track between two bodies of water.  This was the signal to the weather.  Never have I ridden in such heavy rain, it was so hard it sting my face.  Then the wind came up

Ten kilometres later the wonderful sight of the  Golden Tulip Hotel came into sight. We were 3 hours too early for check in. We dripped in the receptionist gave us towels, called house keeping to get our room made up as soon as possible.  We didn’t dare sit on the pretty velvet chairs however there were hard ones in the dinning room and the French Onoion Soup was delicious.  Now we are in our dry room tastefully decorated by drying clothes and the heating is turned right up.  The best thing is that my phone that wouldn’t charge because of the wet has started to charge again.  Life is good

Today's ride: 42 km (26 miles)
Total: 388 km (241 miles)

Scott AndersonI can’t believe you (and Robyn) left NZ to escape the rain and have ended up in conditions like this. Unlucky! Hope things improve soon.

Jane WalaI can’t believe how much rain you have had. Time for it to stop now. I bet that soup tasted AMAZING after the wet and cold.

Carolyn van HoeveHope you get that better weather tomorrow (today)! We had the first sunny weekend in Auckland in what feels like a very long time. So good to be riding our bikes in sun without wind. You need some of that!
