In Bruges

Lost in the 15th Century

Bruges is an easy city to cycle around if you don't mind cobblestones. We had fun wandering up the side streets and around the moat that encloses the old city. Passed up the art museum this time but we did the Historium. The virtual reality dramatizations are a bit cheesy but we were entertained.

The Markt, or main square, from the balcony of the Historium.

Michaelangelo's Madonna in the Church of Our Lady, the first of his sculptures to leave Italy during his lifetime. It was stolen twice - by Napoleon and Hitler, but returned to Bruges.

Nice examples of gables. I like the stair steps on the right.

You can climb up inside the windmill De nieuwe De Papegaai (literal translation, the new parrot?)

For lunch we take a little ride up to the sleepy town of Damme. The paved trail is a nice break from the cobblestones.

Passing a paddle wheeler on the way to Damme.

There's so much more to see here; one day isn't cutting it. Making a note for future tours to go for at least two full days in any city with a lot to see.

One of the remaining medieval gates to Bruges that served as part of the city's defenses
