Canoeing on the Dordogne

A(The journal doesn’t clarify this but we rented a canoe at Lauvinerie, about ten miles up the river from Beynac.  We must have biked there, left our bikes at the boat rental, and then been shuttled back to the starting point after leaving the river below Beynac.)

A perfect day.  Great weather for canoeing - windless, slightly overcast and cool in the morning, eventually turning sunny.  A beautiful route the whole way, for 25 km.  In the river at 10:30, out at 4.  Picnic by the riverside: ham and cheese sandwiches and pistachios.  Wonderful views looking up at Montfort, La Roque-Gagnac, Beynac, Castelnaud.  The countryside is amazing - beautiful landscape, dense with historic sites.

After returning to our hotel we walked up to the castle for stupendous views of the valley and for a castle tour ( in French).  We had a light dinner of salad and crepes on the way down.
