The rain in Spain

Day 13 - Moratinos (nr Sahagún) to Carrión de los Condes

Renders our efforts vain. And we complain.

As mentioned, the forecast for the next few days isn't great. Lots of rain, lots of humidity (as our lovely Winnipeg warmshowers hosts said about England, "It's a wet cold," which they believed to be worse than their Canadian -20c dry cold), low temperatures, even snow.

It was raining before we were awake this morning.

But we thought: we are not simple puny holidayers who can't go out in the rain! We are adventurous! We are hardy. We have waterproof trousers.

My cheapo silicon shoe covers, that I have used before in Scottish drizzle and been quite satisfied with.

We suffered...

Just like this little bird.

We gave up. I think it was just too wet: my shoes got wet through my covers, Sarah's waterproof socks somehow ended up full of water (only waterproof from the inside?? Seriously, water poured out when she took them off, like a cartoon!) and we were both pretty cold. I was of the opinion that if we keep cycling, we would keep warm enough, and we can't get any wetter. But Sarah feels the cold more and decided she couldn't go on (with socks full of icy water, who can blame her).

Not warm or happy.

So, we stopped. Now the challenge is to see if we can dry any of our stuff enough to wear it tomorrow. The forecast is cold but hopefully no rain.

A bit of a frustration as we are feeling more up to speed now and able to do some longer days, but that's cycle touring! It's still ~85km to Burgos, so we'll see how far we get tomorrow. I'll just go and hair dryer my shoes.

Today's ride: 35 km (22 miles)
Total: 370 km (230 miles)
