Roman holiday

Day 53 - Caorle to Aquileia

It really feels like summer is here now. I guess the temperatures aren't as high as they get - thankfully - but we've had a few days of consistent clear skies and sunshine, which has been really nice.

Despite it mostly being on fairly busy roads, and even having an annoying dead end early on (there being no canal bridge where komoot said there was one) it was really lovely. 80kms of beautiful Italian countryside, with green lagoon-water canals, vineyards, and even some impressive far off mountains.

We ended in the town of Aquileia. It's pretty small fry these days, only a few thousand inhabitants, but as long ago as the 2nd century AD it had up to 100,000! History is wild. Not much to show for them now, at least above ground, but fascinating all the same.

Tomorrow we'll be in Trieste, then soon, Slovenia! It's weird to think that our "Western Europe" leg of the trip is nearly over. At the beginning I was kind of wishing we were going faster, as we weren't doing many miles a day and our visa time is limited, but now it feels like it was over so quickly! At least there will be plenty of time for European holidays in the future, while the next leg might be a bit more uncommon, a bit more exotic. Italy has been great, but I'm excited for what's to come.

Today's ride: 78 km (48 miles)
Total: 2,244 km (1,394 miles)
