Bests, Worsts, and Some Statistics - Summer's Almost Gone - CycleBlaze

Bests, Worsts, and Some Statistics

Start: My driveway in Henderson, Kentucky

End: My mother-in-law's driveway in Adel, Iowa

Weight of bike with everything on it: Approximately 75 lbs.

Miles: 1,642

States: Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa

Days: 24 (22 days of riding, 2 rest days)

Average miles per day, including rest days: 68.4

Average miles per day, not including rest days: 74.6

Most miles in a day: 98, on day seven. This is the first bicycle tour I've ever done in which I did not ride at least one 100-mile day :(

Least miles in a day: 39 on day 12

Total elevation gain (per Strava): A very unimpressive 42,147 feet.

Most elevation gain in a day: 5,234 feet on day two

Least elevation gain in a day: 220 feet (!) on day five, on the Katy Trail

Flat tires: Zero

Low tires: One

Mechanical problems: Zero

Bad drivers: Maybe six or seven total

Worst traffic: The two miles from South Roxana to Hartford on day four. I picked the worst possible time of day to ride that section of road. And I knew better, since I rode it all the time when I lived in Illinois :(

Best road of the trip: Several great roads, but these two stand out: An awesome empty gravel road on day eighteen heading to Cozad, Nebraska, and a great empty paved road on day nineteen between Cozad and Calloway, Nebraska. I love that part of Nebraska, which hardly any touring cyclists ever visit, for some reason.

Best "gas station pizza": Casey's

Best "gas station pastry": The Apple fritter at Casey's

Best convenience store: Casey's, obviously! Don't even talk to me about "Kum & Go." Gross.

Worst restaurant meal: Nearly inedible cheese pizza for dinner on day three at the Original Springs hotel. It's hard to believe anyone could screw up a cheese pizza this badly. I actually threw a large portion of it away, despite being very hungry after riding 95 miles that day.

Best restaurant meal: Incredibly delicious vegetable fried rice at a Himalayan restaurant owned by a Bhutanese refugee couple in the middle of nowhere in Kansas on day thirteen.

Cheapest indoor lodging: $48.84 including tax at an actually-not-so-terrible motel in Kansas on day twelve. Lots of "interesting" characters were living in that place ;)

Most expensive indoor lodging: $185.15 at a fancy B&B on day four. My aversion to planning anything on this trip really cost me that time.

Favorite small town: Arcadia, Nebraska, population 311. I camped in the town park and had dinner at the bar and grill. Everyone in Arcadia was so friendly.

Rain: Maybe a couple of hours total, mostly drizzle, and mostly on day seven.

Hottest temperature while riding: 99F on day nine.

Least impressive small town slogan: "Welcome to Scotia: Home of the Chalk Mine" on day twenty.

Kind, helpful people: Many

Unkind people: None
