Removing grease from bike chain from clothing

Rachael Anderson

when Scott and I were carrying the bikes up and down the steep stairs in  Nice, I got grease on my shorts and new long sleeve shirt.  I tried washing them out with soap but it didn’t help.  Does anyone have a recommendation of what else I might try?

Try rubbing the affected area with liquid laundry soap.

If laundry liquid is not available dish washing liquid may work.

If available, possibly Dawn dish detergent or Dawn Power Wash. Dawn really is a great grease remover.

thanks for the suggestion.  I will be in apartment with laundry facilities soon and will try it out.

This will require a hand washing of the affected areas. Get the grease area slightly damp, use anything soap-like, shampoo, hand washing soap, dish detergent, laundry soap, and rub that into the grease (inside AND outside the garment) and let it sit for a bit. Hot water is going to be your friend here, too. If one thing doesn't work, try another. If your place has a little brush for dishes or handwashing, you can employ that too, gently but firmly. And for bike grease hands and leg tattoos, I've found that those little 'Wet Ones' towelettes work amazingly well to get that crap off. I have a packet of those in with the tire changing tools.

no, but thanks for reminding me of one more reason I hated that place.  Which reminds me - I still haven't left a review on AirBnB yet.

We stay in motels on our trips and always take those little packets of makeup remover that some motels supply. Great for clean up on roadside after flats, take grease off legs and clean grease off clothes! Some brands work better than others, you can probably use to take off makeup too!

From the It's Not Elegant But It Works section...

Grease is easily and quickly removed at any petrol filling station. There are always a few drops left in the pump hoses. Pour some on to a tissue, apply to clothes or legs or hands, wave to the counter staff (who, if they notice at all, will smile at your ingenuity) and ride on.

You'll have to rinse your hands and perhaps more so your clothes, but the problem is solved.
