Reading this brings back memories of my cycle trip along parts of the Western front following our New Zealand Soldiers in the summer of 2016. My first solo trip.
There was a large contingency of Canadian solider and I think Yorkshire. They marched at the beginning of the ceremony and at the end the bulgers played an answer and reply.
These are allmaps we picked up on previous trips. We collect them as we go and send them home periodically when we have too many and the weight is getting oppressive. It would be more sensible to try to get thembeforehand, but sensible seems to be a difficult thing to do.
7 years agoA lot of these look like a tourist bureau maps. Did you request those by email, or buy them online? I always pick up stuff like this along the way in tourist offices, but it seems like so much effort to get it before I leave.
7 years agoAs a Canadian, I associate The Last Post with Remembrance Day (November 11) and it makes me sad.
I looked up Taps on Youtube and yes, it's the song we sang at the end of Girl Guide meetings.
Funny how we are products of our similar but different cultures.

Amazing to me that I’m not familiar with the Last Post. I’ve undoubtedly read references to it or heard it in films many times without knowing what it was.

The Exhortation is referred to as The Ode here in Oz and is recited daily in every RSL (Returned and Services League Club) at 6PM followed by The Last Post. We last heard it in Echuca on our recent ride when we visited the local RSL for a meal. All the Australian soldiers were volunteers as I suspect were your own countrymen.

We Americans are not that familiar with "The Last Post". If you want to break us into pieces, play "Taps". But all of this exploration of WWI history is very moving and I appreciate you sharing. One of my grandfathers was there and my children's great-grandfather was gassed in France. They both came home but no doubt suffered the after-effects for the rest of their lives.

Avec l'ami Bidasse
On ne se quitte jamais,
Attendu qu'on est
